Method and apparatus for constant access to catheter lumen for automatic injection of contrast medium, saline flush allowing free catheter manipulation and device delivery

Project Overview

During diagnostic and therapeutic image-guided endovascular procedures, there is a requirement for multiple injections of contrast medium and continuous delivery of saline flush solution. Currently, contrast medium delivery requires manual connection of a syringe to the delivery catheter for each contrast injection. Care must be taken so that air bubbles or small thrombi are not inadvertently injected. Since, in a typical procedure, this sequence is often repeated over 50 times, this adds significant time to a procedure. Manual injection of contrast also limits the ability to reproduce bolus characteristics and requires that the operator remain near to the x-ray source during image acquisitions. We would like to develop a method and apparatus that would allow connection to a saline flush and contrast medium source at the start of a procedure with the ability to automatically inject pre-programmed contrast injections, maintain continuous flush delivery and retain access to the catheter lumen for device and guide wire manipulation and delivery. There is a requirement that this also allows free catheter manipulation and the ability to insure that air and thrombi are not present.
