Project Overview

The intention of this project is to design and prototype a forearm compression device that will be used to attempt establishing proof of concept of forearm compressive prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurrence in the legs and display improved utility in comparison to current pneumatic compression devices used. Current designs use pneumatic compression to the legs or feet, which is generally noisy, and bulky, and specifically in the foot can be painful because of the high pressure required. Reconfiguration of this method to the forearm and the use of non-pneumatic compression would ideally resolve these problems in addition to increasing patient motility, if it can be done without significant decrease in effectiveness.
