Project Overview

End-to-end anastomosis of vessels is the connection of a vessel from a pre-existing tissue to a vessel from a distant tissue, using a flow coupler to combine the vessels. This procedure is necessary in free flap reconstructive surgery in order to maintain blood flow to the new tissue and contribute to overall success of the procedure. Current procedural complications involve kinking of the vessel during coupler implantation. The goal of our project is to improve upon the current methods used for blood flow monitoring by creating a blood flow coupler system to be used in free-flap anastomosis to reduce the complication of vessel kinking.
