Project Overview

John G Webster, Ph.D., Professor at the University of Wisconsin- Madison in the Biomedical engineering department will supervise this project concerning Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which affects many adults and children in the U.S. It is a result of a weakened lower esophageal sphincter that allows the passage of stomach acid back through the lower esophageal sphincter and into the stomach. This project will focus on developing a mechanical valve that will be implanted within the lower esophageal sphincter to allow food into the stomach while preventing the acid within from entering the esophagus. This is a first semester project, and we will concentrate specifically on the structure, material composition, and placement of the Gastroesophageal reflux preventer.
