Project Overview

A patient’s risk of falling is currently measured in a clinic by trained medical personnel and the aid a stopwatch. This introduces an element of human error and time constraint. A solution is needed to standardize these tests while making the delivery of the test easier and more time efficient. This semester’s goal is to create a program using the Microsoft Kinect system, which will instruct patients through the four physical performance battery tests. The program will accurately record the time it takes to complete these tasks as well as extrapolate data based off the joint angles of the patient while completing the test. By recording these parameters, the program will be able to determine the patient’s risk of falling. The set up will be simple, thus allowing it to be used efficiently in a clinical setting with minimal training. Furthermore, a Kinect Calibrator will also be integrated into the project to measure the accuracy of the Microsoft Kinect software.
