Project Overview

At GE Healthcare in Madison, WI, we develop and test Anesthesia Machines and Critical Care Ventilators. As part of our testing, we need to ensure the accuracy of volume monitoring, delivery, and Functional Residual Capacity (FRC) measurements of our machines. To do this properly, we must simulate the physical conditions present when our machines are used on a patient. Currently, we have a separate test setup that can mix and exchange gases and one that can be humidified and heated to human-like conditions. We would like a test fixture that combines these features while limiting fixture “dead space” to an amount similar to the anatomical dead space of a human.
