Project Overview

Body odor is present among all humans. However, its intensity has been considered a very important factor amongst many human cultures. In daily life, some people have unpleasant body or breath odors and don’t realize that their odors affect others surrounding them. Olfactory fatigue, also known as odor fatigue, refers to the temporary, normal inability to distinguish a particular odor after a prolonged exposure to that airborne compound. Typically, if one smells a kind of odor for a long period of time, they will probably lose the ability to distinguish this odor. That is exactly why sometimes one person does not realize his or her body odor is severe while others already smell it.
In most social situations, having body odor is very embarrassing. However, to remind someone of their body odor is even more awkward. Therefore, in order to prevent this awkward situation, a device, which is able to detect irritant smells emitting from individuals, would be very helpful for those who are suffering from body odor. The threshold will be tested and determined so that once the odor is enough to be smelled by surrounding people, the device will be able to distinguish it and prompt on an app.
This device is designed to be carried around the waist or neck while constantly monitoring the body odors. In addition, we expect this device to connect to a smartphone application which sends out notifications when concentration reaches threshold. The goal is to make users realize that their body or breath odors can be noticed by others, so they can take actions accordingly.
