Project Overview

Cerebral angiography is a central nervous system diagnostic test in which a catheter is fed through an incision in the groin to the carotid artery in the neck. Contrast dye is injected into the catheter using a syringe; the dye travels through the catheter to the blood vessels in the brain. Since the syringe injection is done manually, air bubbles can be injected into the catheter with the contrast dye. When the air bubbles reach the brain, mini strokes will occur and further complicate the procedure. The team is tasked with designing an auto-filling syringe manifold with an air filter to be used in cerebral angiography procedures to mitigate the risk of air bubbles reaching the brain’s blood vessels.
