Minnetronix Project: Load for ventricular assist device
Project Overview
Minnetronix Inc. develops software for VADs, and needs a more sophisticated way to test them. The goal of this project is to develop an inexpensive mock human circulatory loop that can be used to test the performance of VADs by mimicking the resistance and compliance that a VAD would experience in vivo. A ventricular assist device (VAD) is a partially implantable device that helps maintain the pumping ability of a diseased heart. The VAD pumps blood in parallel to one of the chambers of the heart, which is typically the left ventricle. A VAD is often used as a bridge to help a patient survive until a heart transplant becomes available, though long term uses are being researched.
