Degenerative arthritis is a very common disease in those over 65, the fastest growing age group of the population. Caused by deterioration of the articular cartilage on joint bone surfaces, degenerative arthritis leads to functional failure of the joint, resulting in pain and eventually loss of the ability of the joint to bear weight. Medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen and injections of cortisol can help ease pain but are only temporary. The last option is a partial or total joint replacement, an expensive procedure that contains risks of surgery and a long recovery period. The goal is to design a synthetic cartilage substitute that can be injected or applied through minimally invasive surgical techniques.
