Emergency Medicine frequently sees patients with secondary cerumen impaction, commonly due to the use of a Q-tip in attempt to remove ear wax from the ear. Using a Q-tip is damaging to the ear canal as cerumen is pushed farther into the ear, as well as the potential harm the Q-tip has in damaging the tympanic membrane. The Ear Gator is a self-operatored device that will be used to easily and safely remove cerumen from the ear canal using that incorporates a fluid solution to soften the ear wax. The design is intended to enable patients to remove cerumen of their ear canals in their own homes, rather than the common alternative of going to urgent care.
