The team will develop a Robotic Arm Sonographer Assist (RASA) device to alleviate pressure on sonographers’ shoulders from ultrasound scanning that often leads to the development of work-related musculoskeletal disorders.

Project Overview

To solve the common issue of work-related musculoskeletal disorder that plagues nearly 90% of sonographers, our team will develop a RASA in order to alleviate pressure on the shoulder and wrist, assist in difficult positioning, and allow sonographers to deliver better patient care. The team will design a device that assists sonographers in ultrasound procedures by applying up to 30 pounds of force with a transducer by linear translation. The device must be free to rotate and should simulate human wrist motion for manipulation of the transducer in order to repeatedly provide high-quality images, possess an adjustable head for interchanging transducers, and be suited to applications on various parts of the body, specifically for examinations on the abdominal, breast, and pelvic regions. These design specifications will reduce strain on the sonographer’s shoulder while still obtaining quality images.
