Login for More InformationThis project develops a cost-effective, reusable, MRI/ultrasound-compatible pediatric hip phantom to train medical residents in performing hip arthrocentesis for diagnosing septic arthritis.
Project Overview
In response to the lack of affordable and realistic training models for pediatric hip arthrocentesis, our team designed a reusable phantom that mimics the mechanical properties of soft tissue, bone, and the hip joint capsule. Requested by Dr. Tuo Peter Li, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon in Madison, WI, the model features a double-membrane balloon design with self-healing injection ports to simulate real joint aspiration. Once validated, this phantom aims to improve residents’ procedural confidence, reduce training costs, and enhance early diagnosis of septic arthritis in pediatric patients.
