Our goal is to develop an at-home remedy for treating MGD that heats and effectively massages meibum out of clogged meibomian glands.

Project Overview

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is the condition wherein the meibomian glands, located near the eyelids, fail to excrete the necessary oil required for eye hydration and protection. This can be due to the oil getting clogged in the glands or a lack of production of the oils; regardless, this results in eye itching, redness, constant watering, and daily discomfort. This is due to the condition causing changes in tear film steadiness, inflammation, or irritation. Should MGD go untreated, symptoms worsen, resulting in styes in need of treatment at a medical office or even surgery. The usual treatment consists of warm compresses and self-massage to loosen these gland blockages, although serious cases may require steroids or inpatient care. Affecting 38.5% of the population, MGD can be congenital or acquired, seen more frequently in men over 60. Given the broad range of people impacted by this condition, the need for a safe, effective means of releasing the meibum to reduce the symptoms of MGD is highly prevalent. Thus, the main goal of a device to alleviate the symptoms of MGD would be to apply warm, vertical pressure to the middle of the eye on all four eyelids, safely softening the meibum blocking the meibomian glands.
