Designing a new steerable IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) Filter retrieval forceps.

Project Overview

There is a significant clinical need for designing new instruments to enable image-guided IVC filter retrieval for embedded IVC filters. The existing products on the market have many disadvantages and the only retrieval forceps that was on the market is no longer being manufactured, leaving a significant unfulfilled need. Interventional radiologists at UWHealth have extensive experience with IVC Filter retrievals. In collaboration with BME students, we hope to design a new filter retrieval instrument that addresses many of the existing design gaps in the market and help create a more effective and safer IVC filter retrieval technique for our patients.
