To develop a test to quantify the vitamin D 25-hydroxy level in a patient that is less invasive than a blood draw and just as accurate.

Project Overview

Monitoring of 25(OH)D levels in patients is critical for managing pediatric bone disorders. However, the current method to obtain 25(OH)D levels uses a blood draw, which is invasive and often causes anxiety for young patients. This demonstrates the importance of developing an accurate, minimally invasive method for measuring 25(OH)D in pediatric patients. This project aims to develop improved strategies for assessing vitamin D status by creating a non-invasive quantification method using urine as a testing medium and fabricating a minimally invasive blood-collection device capable of obtaining reliable 25(OH)D measurements from low sample volumes.
