Autofocus Microscopy
Project Overview
During a neurosurgery, surgeons navigate using an operating microscope. While it serves as a valuable tool, the currently used microscope also introduces a complication. Its shallow depth of field limits the area in which the surgeon may work and requires him or her to frequently halt the surgery in order to refocus to the desired depth. We seek to overcome this complication and thereby simplify and expedite the neurosurgical process by developing a microscope focusing system whereby the depth at which the microscope focuses is automatically adjusted based on the position of the tip of the surgical implement in use.
