Project Overview

In 2009, 1 in 12 Americans had asthma and in 2007, asthma's prevalence in the US cost $56 billion in medical expenses. In 2008, more children (57%) than adults (51%) had at least one asthma attack making the percentage of those afflicted with asthma who had at least one attack that year 53%. In this same year less than half of adults with asthma said they were taught how to avoid triggering it.

The prevalence of asthma worldwide is estimated to be 300 million people with 250,000 dying annually. Most of these deaths are avoidable.

Our design team will continue work on an "asthma shirt" that measures volume changes and sounds to optimize data collection and create algorithms to analyze respiratory measurands such as tidal volume, respiratory rate, and coughing and wheezing sounds. This continuous monitoring will allow a patient to take appropriate medication at a better time to mitigate asthma exacerbations. Thus this device may have potential to reduce the unfortunate statistics above significantly.
