The fastest growing portion of our population is of the age 85 years or older. Many of these individuals are living alone in their homes despite significant health differences from those younger than them. At this age, it is often for elders to fall due to their frailty. When this happens, it is common for the paramedics to be called on site to assist the elderly individual in getting back into their chair. Although this situation is a common emergency for the elderly, there are far more significant events that happen in society that require the immediate attention of paramedics. However, because these individuals must respond to the calls of the elderly, significant resources are wasted and emergency personnel are taken away from more emergent tasks.
Our goal is to develop a device that could lift the fallen elder back up into their chair in order to allow a more efficient use of limited resources.
