Joint replacement surgeries are complex procedures that have subtle differences between each patient. The ability to recognize these subtle differences is not something robots would be inherently capable of,
but there is an opportunity for robotics to help improve the surgery process. The process of suturing the skin closed is a laborious, but extremely important, process performed by more senior personnel to ensure its quality. The scope of our project is to develop a robotic device that is capable of properly suturing the skin closed following a joint replacement surgery. The device would utilize a mechanical mechanism to replicate the suture path and knot. This device could help ease the workload of the surgical personnel and allow for a more efficient skin closure process.
