The aim for this project is to improve education in neonatal lumbar puncture by creating an ultrasound simulation trainer that provides repeatable, precise, and accurate training for spinal tap providers.

Project Overview

The current training ideology for neonatal lumbar punctures utilizes experienced providers training newer providers. These types of opportunities are inconsistent and require fragile infants to be exposed to prolonged examinations, which requires parental consent. Although real-time practice on actual infants is desirable, ill infants are often intolerant to prolonged lumbar puncture operations; this further decreases educational experiences for neonatal providers like our client. The team’s goal is to make an ultrasound simulation trainer that provides accessibility to repeatable, precise training for inexperienced neonatal spinal tap providers while mimicking a newborn’s spinal column.
