Project Overview
Eradicating deep infections, specifically hip infections, requires dissection surgery for the patient and intensive post-operative care. The standard treatment method applies to infections less than 60 days of onset with a resection surgery and rounds of antibiotic treatment. If the infection is over 60 days, the patient must undergo a 2-step revision surgery to replace the infected hip. The most common tool used for this procedure is a standard #10 scalpel, and the techniques utilized differ with each surgeon. To optimize time and post-operative care, a novel surgical instrument must be developed to streamline irrigation and debridement during the resection surgery.
