Develop a catheter capable of cryogenically affixing to tissue before rapidly ablating a large target area.

Project Overview

The goal is to create an innovative catheter capable of freezing its tip while applying pressure proximally along the shaft, which has significant applications in treating arrhythmias. Arrhythmias often necessitate the creation of a scar line to eliminate them, and traditionally, this has been achieved invasively using catheters. However, the conventional approach involves creating lesions one at a time, similar to building a wall brick by brick, which can be challenging as catheters struggle to maintain consistent tissue contact. This can result in gaps forming, leading to the recurrence of arrhythmias. To address this issue, a combination of cryotherapy, which can securely adhere to the tissue, and electrical proration for effective tissue ablation is proposed. This innovative technique involves freezing the catheter's tip and then pushing the shaft against the myocardium to ensure proper contact, potentially revolutionizing arrhythmia treatment.
