Project Overview
Customized upper extremity orthoses are widespread in hand surgery clinics. These customized orthotics are generally handcrafted by occupational hand therapists using thermoplastic materials, which are effective, but time-consuming to create and offer a limited range of materials. 3D printing has been used to print custom orthoses. Still, this process has not been widely adopted largely because the printing process itself takes several hours to a full day, and digitally designing a printable orthotic is time-consuming or requires outsourcing to an expert or the use of expensive commercially available software. The overarching goal of this project is to develop a system for an orthopedic surgery clinic to 3D print customized orthotics without the need for outsourcing design or manufacturing.
