Model that will be used for a Peritonsillar Abscess procedure training done by emergency medicine residents.

Project Overview

Peritonsillar abscesses (PTAs) are the most common deep head and neck-type infection that present in the emergency room, affecting around 45,000 people annually. There are two methods of surgical intervention to treat PTAs: needle aspiration or incision and drainage (I&D). Although needle aspirations are the most common method of treatment, I&Ds are usually required in more advanced cases of PTA. Although PTA drainages are not considered a difficult surgery comparatively, complications such as aspiration of blood and pus, hemorrhage, and the puncturing of the carotid artery are possible if the drainage is not performed by a trained surgeon. Procedural models are used to help ENT residents train for PTA treatment, but are difficult to reset and inefficient. We have been tasked to create an improved procedural model for PTA treatment that can be easily reset, is cost-effective, and anatomically correct.
