This project aims to create a soft plastic tube that prevents an endotracheal tube from catching on the vocal cords when performing intubation with a bougie.

Project Overview

Numerous difficulties and complications arise during emergency endotracheal intubation procedures. A bougie is an intubation-assist device that is commonly used to help primary intubation patients who are difficult to intubate and to help exchange endotracheal tubes when a new tube is required. With the use of the bougie, a gap exists between the bougie stylet and the endotracheal tube, which can easily get caught on the vocal cords instead of riding over them. This can cause damage to the vocal cords and lead to more severe complications such as hypoxia, injury, and in some cases even cardiac arrest. In hopes of resolving this issue, this project works to create an introduction device for the bougie that closes this gap that causes "vocal cord catch" for improved intubation.
