Wireless pressure-sensors for braces and casts
This project has been secured to protect intellectual property.
Login for More InformationThe objective for this project is to prevent soft tissue injuries from rigid immobilization devices by detecting critically high areas of pressure
Project Overview
Wireless pressure-sensors that can be incorporated into casts and orthotics would help detect hot spots before pressure sores develop in patients who lack protective sensation or have compromised skin. Pressure mesh sensors currently exist but typically rely on wires for output signal and require an external power source. Ideally, for an orthopedic brace or cast, the sensors would be cordless/wireless to allow freedom of movement and connect via Bluetooth to an output screen for real-time data. Something similar was developed in Korea and published in Nature in 2021. Our goal would be to create a more affordable version. If successful, an affordable wireless pressure-sensor mesh would have a tremendous impact and benefit patients who have diabetes, spinal cord injuries, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, and many other disorders.
