Project Overview
Excoriation disorder (skin-picking disorder) is a body-focused repetitive behavior in which individuals repeatedly manipulate their skin, often causing tissue damage such as bleeding, scarring, and other lesions. Skin-picking episodes may occur automatically or with limited awareness, causing individuals to not recognize the behavior until after damage has occurred. Although behavioral interventions such as Habit Reversal Training aim to increase awareness and promote competing responses, they may not provide immediate feedback when manipulation of a specific lesion begins. Existing wound dressings primarily provide passive protection and do not detect or respond to skin manipulation. Similarly, current wearable monitoring systems generally rely on generalized hand or wrist movements and cannot determine whether a specific healing lesion is being touched or picked. We propose the development of a protective wound dressing combined with a lesion-specific sensor that can identify manipulation of the skin and alert the user in real time, allowing them to interrupt harmful skin-picking.
