Adjustable scalp surgical-field isolation device for dermatologic surgery

Login for More InformationWe are designing an adjustable scalp isolation device that keeps hair away from the surgical site.
Project Overview
Current scalp surgeries require the patient’s hair around the site to be shaved. This allows the surgical team to have an unobstructed view of the incision site, reduces the chance of any interference during suturing, and leads to a lower chance at developing an infection at the wound site. Despite this, many surgeons are moving away from this and instead advocating for other techniques to expose the incision site, allowing the patient’s hair to remain intact while still being sterile during the surgery. Current isolation devices can cause unnecessary tension, can be painful to remove, and don’t allow for adjustment during surgery. Our aim is to create an isolation device for scalp dermatologic surgeries that is adjustable in real-time, applicable to all hair types, and maximizes both patient comfort and integrates seamlessly into current dermatologic workflows.
