Project Overview
Total knee arthroplasties (TKA) is a growing procedure that replaces damaged knee joints with metal implants. The process can be extremely painful and take many months to recover. The goal of this project is to develop a sensor based sleeve for evaluating the knee biomechanics of a postoperative TKA. This sleeve must monitor specific aspects of the knee biomechanics such as flexion/extension, varus/valgus, and internal/external rotation. The data captured will be able to be relayed back to the surgeons so they can make improvements upon the TKA procedure for future patients. Having objective biomechanical data points will be able to inform surgeons with specific details of where improvements can be made during the TKA procedure, rather than relying on primarily patient feedback. This information will allow surgeons to improve the procedure, resulting in a shorter and less painful recovery time.
