Project Overview
Thoroughbred race horses are prone to stress fractures of the metatarsal bones due to regular high output physical exertion. These injuries can have effects ranging from discomfort and worsening performance, to lameness ultimately requiring euthanization. Current treatment options are limited to rest and recovery or surgical intervention to correct fractures [1]. Currently there is room for physician error in these surgeries during screw placement which can lead to surgical complications and undesired outcomes. The team has been tasked with creating a patient specific drilling guide to reduce the human error in transchondral screw placement while being easily reproducible and cost effective.
