Project Overview
Upright CT scanners, such as Leo Cancer Care's Marie®, lower the gantry over a seated patient, which causes concern about collisions with the patient's shoulders, arms, and elbows. Existing light-beam touch guards both leave gaps in bore coverage and degrade under radiation. Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) are small gratings inscribed in optical fibers that are passive and sensitive to changes in strain and temperature, which an interrogator detects and reads using shifts in the wavelength of light reflected from the grating. We propose the development of a compact, detachable touch-sensing surface with an array of FBG fiber optic cables that mounts inside the bore of an upright CT scanner and detects both contact with and proximity to the patient.
