Project Overview
Breast cancer patients who undergo mastectomy often have part/all of their breasts removed. At the University of Wisconsin Health System, external breast prostheses are often available only in limited sizes, making it difficult to achieve a desired fit. This could result in discomfort, prosthesis displacement, and inconsistent appearance, which significantly impact patients’ social-psychological life. A specifically tailored prosthesis is often desired. Current 3D modeling provides possible solutions but lacks efficiency and accessibility, since it requires substantial manual work and engineering expertise. Artificial intelligence can be integrated into 3D scanning and modeling software to minimize manual work. The team will develop an AI-integrated software that guides clinicians and nurses through mobile device-based 3D scanning. Focusing on unilateral mastectomy cases, the software will process scans of the surgical site and the healthy breast to automate the generation of a customized prosthesis model.
