The goal of this project is to develop a gross pathology morphometric data collection and archiving device that can derive quantitative measurements and digital preservation of specimens from digital models of anatomic soft tissue.

Project Overview

The goal of this project is to develop a gross pathology morphometric data collection and archiving device that can derive quantitative measurements and digital preservation of specimens from digital models of anatomic soft tissue. This requires 3D models that are both metrically accurate (so measurements are trustworthy) and photorealistic (so features and landmarks can be identified). Two complementary technologies are relevant- a 3D surface scan (structured-light or laser) gives metric geometry and absolute scale but records little useful appearance. A Gaussian splat, reconstructed from photographs, is photorealistic but geometrically soft and, because it comes from structure-from-motion, lacks reliable scale. Neither alone is sufficient for confident morphometrics; a device that captures both and aligns them into one model is the target.
