The project aims to develop a multimodal wound assessment system that combines visual observations and wound microenvironment measurements to help clinicians identify barriers to healing and monitor treatment response.

Project Overview

Chronic wound assessment often relies on visual observations and changes in wound size, which may not fully reveal the underlying conditions preventing healing. This project aims to develop a multimodal wound barrier assessment system that combines information about wound appearance with measurable indicators of the wound microenvironment. Potential indicators include pH, protease activity, inflammation, bacterial burden, and tissue oxygenation.
The team will evaluate sensing and imaging methods to determine which combination of measurements can provide useful information while remaining affordable and practical for clinical use. The proposed system will present results in an accessible format and support tracking across repeated assessments. By bringing complementary measurements together, the project aims to help clinicians recognize potential barriers to healing, inform treatment decisions, and evaluate how a wound responds over time.
