The objective of this project is to create an intuitive and lightweight tool that automates the cleaning of the laparoscopic lens to completely eliminate the need for removal of the laparoscope for manual cleaning of the lens.

Project Overview

The goal of this project is to develop a method of cleaning a surgical endoscope during minimally invasive surgery. During surgery, surgical endoscopes are inserted through 3mm or 5mm diameter ports to allow the surgeons to see the anatomy and structures that are being operated on. One of the most common issues during surgery is that the lens at the end of the scope becomes fogged or dirtied by condensation or debris, blood, or smoke. Given that minimally invasive surgery can provide benefits such as smaller incisions and quicker recovery, it is advantageous to decrease the number of times an endoscope needs to be removed. Reducing this removal number to zero will decrease time and cost of the surgery, which is why the goal of this project is to develop a prototype that can clean the lens of the endoscope while surgery is being performed.
