Project Overview

Running is the most popular method of exercise around the world. In 2017, up to 40 million people reported running regularly in the US alone. However, with a spike in leisurely runners (those not receiving professional coaching/ guidance for running), there has been an increase in over-use and lower-extremity injuries as well. Shin Splints, most commonly referring to medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), is an overuse injury of the tibia and associated muscles that affects 5%-35% of runners and running athletes. Despite decades of research and advances in shoes, insoles, orthotics, etc. there is very little evidence supporting the effectiveness of existing solutions such as heel pads, alternative footwear, graduated running programs, shock-absorbent insoles, etc. and the injury continues to persist at high rates among runners and athletes. Our goal is to develop a user-centered, automated running coach that benefits leisurely runners and hopefully prevents injuries before they even happen.
