JangoBio: Designing single and multi spinner flasks for organoid culture

This project is partnering with JangoBio, a regenerative stem cell company in Madison to design, build and sell a variety of sterile single- and multi-spinner machine controlled cell culture vessels to meet market demands for an inexpensive device.

Project Overview

Organoids are artificially grown self-organized mini-organs formed from one or more cell types. Under specified conditions, functional organoids for transplantation can be formed from isolated stem cells. One such condition is the use of well-designed vessels for the formation of functional organoids (1-4). Although a few types of spinner flasks are available in the market (5,6), their designs and utility are limited. For instance; smaller spinner flasks less than 50 mL, vessels with multiple spinners or cell culture flasks equipped with spinners are not available in the market at present. Such a product is required when growing up cells from small tissue amounts (e.g. from neonatal or small animals) in order to characterize the organoids and conduct functional in vitro or in vivo studies. Likewise, re-usable spinner flasks are also not available. In addition, current chip-based well-regulated multi-well bioreactor systems available in the market is prohibitively expensive (6; 4-vessel system ~$150,000). This project would partner with JangoBio, a regenerative stem cell company in Madison to design, build and sell a variety of sterile single- and multi-spinner machine controlled cell culture vessels to meet market demands for an inexpensive device. Initial designs (to be patent protected) need to be elaborated upon to determine their technological feasibility. Students will help throughout the process of designing, building and testing of such devices. This project will therefore provide ample opportunity for biomedical engineering students to brainstorm, train and work under an excellent academic-industry collaborative environment.
